This page is to answer all your questions so that you can walk into your photo session confidant, comfortable, and ready to have a great time!
1. What is Boudoir Photography?
The word “boudoir” has been used over centuries as a name related to the bedroom or a women’s private dressing room or sitting room within a bed room. These uses have led to the modern short definition of boudoir photography as “bedroom photography,” though boudoir photography may be set in a variety of environments. Boudoir is derived from the French word “bouder,” which means “to pout.” Boudoir images enjoyed it’s heyday during the 30’s and 40’s pin up era, and today women are rediscovering it as an artistic way to celebrate themselves and as gifts to their significant others.
Many brides-to-be enjoy doing a boudoir session to give to their husbands on their wedding night.. Other women enjoy it as a bonding time with close friends at a Pin Up Party, or to celebrate a birthday or bachelorette party. Many women are enjoying their lives just as much (or more) now than when they were in their 20’s, and are celebrating this with a boudoir session.
2. Help, I don’t look like a supermodel!
Don’t worry honey, no one does. Everyone has an unique beauty, no matter what your age or pant-size! Your comfort and confidence are what make you truly stunning. To help you feel confident, I use professional hair and make-up artists, as well as flattering lighting and signature retouching methods to create beautiful images that present the best you. Most women finish their Boudoir Session feeling more confident about their bodies than when they came in.
3. What do I wear?
My sessions always have one main purpose, to bring out your personal beauty and style. You probably have more options in your wardrobe than you think. If you’re in doubt, have a friend help you go through your wardrobe and see what options you can create.
Some ideas can be bra-and-panty sets, boy shorts, lingerie, corsets, thigh-high stockings, fishnets, sexy dresses, tight jeans, mini skirts, accessories such as hats, beaded necklaces, bracelets, rings, scarves, and don’t forget the high heels! If your photo session is meant as a gift, it’s nice to bring a piece of clothing of your significant others: a white dress shirt, jersey, hat, motorcycle helmet or jacket, etc.
There are some great stores in Kingston that cater to Boudoir Style. I recommend Extreme Style and Get Funky Boutique as good places to get started. Let them know what you’re planning, and they’ll be happy to help you prepare the perfect outfit and accessories.
It is always best to bring 3-4 options, and we can have a wardrobe consultation before we begin the photo session.
4. What happens during a Boudoir Session?
Generally, this is what your session will look like:
We meet at the agreed upon location, a hotel room, your house, etc. We talk about what will happen for the photo shoot – anything you have specifically in mind as far as clothing, hair, make-up, or set up.
We pop some bubbly and you relax while your hair and make-up is done.
You change into your first outfit, we pump the music, and I demonstrate and guide you through a fun and exciting photo shoot. You change into your second outfit, and we repeat as necessary!
4. When will I get my pictures?
Depending on your image and print needs, delivery of your images can be between 2-4 weeks. I will let you know when your session is booked what kind of time line to expect for delivery.
5. How do I schedule a session?
Simply click on the contact link above, and let me know what you have in mind!
6. Who will be at my session?
We understand that a Boudoir Session can be personal and private time for you. Except for Pin Up Parties, the only other person in the room during your session will be the photographer. The hair and make up professionals will either wait in a separate room, or will leave, as is necessary. If you would prefer to have a friend or partner in the room, please let me know when you schedule your session.
7. Can my partner be in the photographs with me?
Yes, of course! Please let me know that you would prefer this when you book your session. Additional session costs may apply.
8. I’m pregnant, can we still do a session?
Yes, please! I love photographing pregnant women. The best time to do your prenatal boudoir session is in your 8th month – when you have a big enough belly to brag about, but you arn’t to near the end to be in danger of delivering during the session. We can also do a ‘before and after’ shoot with your newborn. Please contact me for more details.
9. Will my pictures go up on the internet?
I respect the privacy of my clients and only post images of clients that have given their approval. (We also don’t want to spoil any surprises for your special someone!)
10. How do I pay?
I accept cash before your session begins.
11. What if I can’t make our appointment?
We will try to find a time that will work for you as close to your original date as possible. Any hotel room charges for cancelling will be your responsibility.
12. Where do I print my images?
Each session booked includes images on a cd. I recommend printing them at Camera Kingston, where they know Spirit and Spunk Photography, have excellent service, and provide professional and discrete printing.
