Have you ever felt that nagging feeling that something is missing, but you have no idea what?

Do you feel like you are just going through the motions, doing what is expected of you?

Does your life look “perfect” from the outside, but inside, you feel this isn’t the life you signed up for?

Have you started to wonder if that quiet inner voice you keep ignoring is actually trying to lead you home?

I feel you, sister, and I have been there too!

Most recently, it was my job.  I liked the job, until I didn’t.  My days ended in frustration, annoyance, and stress.  I found myself saying, far too often,  “I’m too old for this sh*t.”

What I wanted was to live a life I didn’t need a break from, to feel respected and appreciated at work, and finally live the life that I was meant to.

What I had was a job, not even a career.  It was a means to pay the bills, feed the dog, and buy books (I am a lover of books).  Here I was, in my 50s, living pay cheque to pay cheque, making someone else money, and I was nowhere close to being happy.

I needed to take a hard look at my life and make some changes. I needed to start listening to my inner voice

Turns out that job –  it was no longer aligned with my core beliefs.  So, I pulled up my socks and started figuring out how I could live life on my terms (this is still a work in progress).

Once we hit midlife, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of responsibilities and expectations.

We forget the spirit of who we are.

But what if your deepest desires, your “hell yes” moments, and what truly makes you feel alive aren’t by chance? What if they’re unmistakable signposts pointing you straight to your personal power source?

This isn’t wishful thinking, ladies.

It’s your inner voice, begging for you to take notice and hear her. And when you finally set her free, get ready, because you could be in for a wild ride.

This post isn’t about changing who you are; it is about becoming more of who you have always been.

It’s about remembering what you stand for, and how to live like you mean it—again.

What Are Core Values?

Your true core values are the deal breakers, the morals that drive you, the essential core beliefs (the deep, often unspoken truths you hold about what matters most) that guide how you live, love, lead, and show up. They’re the things that make you feel alive, joyful, and authentically you. When left unnoticed, they leave you feeling drained, bitter, and completely out of whack.

Think of them as your guiding stars, your inner compass. They’re not what you do, but why you do it. They’re the deep-seated truths that define your unapologetic spunk.

Here are ten common ones (yours will be unique to you and may include some not listed here):

  • Freedom: The need for autonomy, choice, and space.
  • Connection: The desire for deep, meaningful relationships.
  • Integrity: The need for truth, and doing what’s right
  • Hope: The confidence to trust that things will work out
  • Ethics: The call to be honest, fair and morally guided
  • Creativity: The urge to innovate, express, and bring new things into existence.
  • Adventure: The longing for new experiences, exploration, and risk.
  • Contribution: The drive to make a difference, to serve, to impact.
  • Authenticity: The commitment to being true to yourself, no matter what.
  • Growth: The continuous pursuit of learning, evolution, and self-improvement.

When you’re aligned with your values, things feel right, even if they’re hard.

When you’re not? Life feels like you’re wearing someone else’s clothes—frumpy, ill-fitting, and feeling like you don’t fit in.

How Midlife Women Lose Touch with Their Core Values

Also known as the everything to everyone but us trap.

We’re subtly (or not-so-subtly) taught that prioritizing others is what we’re here to do, while prioritizing ourselves is … selfish. We become experts in shapeshifting, bending to fit every role: loyal partner, tireless mom, reliable employee, supportive friend.

We say “yes” when our soul screams “NO.” We take paths that look good on paper but feel empty in our gut. We chase external markers of success while our inner compass collects dust. This isn’t intentional sabotage; it’s often a learned survival mechanism. But the cost? A quiet ache, a creeping resentment, and a feeling of disconnect from your own vibrant truth. You didn’t lose your values; you just learned to hide them to survive the daily grind.

We lost sight of what really matters.

But this is our time.  And ya know what?  Midlife is wild.  Midlife is an awakening.

Rebellious Freedom: Living on Purpose

Here’s where the magic, and the rebellion, kicks in.

Reclaiming your values is not about adding more to your to-do list or overhauling your entire life overnight.

It’s about making small, intentional choices that bring you back into alignment.

It’s about doing life your way, unapologetically.

Here’s what happens when you start embracing your core values:

  • Decisions become easier because your values act as your filter. Does this align with my freedom? Does this strengthen my connection?
  • You feel more alive, more vibrant, because you’re no longer fighting your own current. Activities that honor your values energize you; those that don’t become clear drains.
  • You stop apologizing for who you are. Your “inner rebel” isn’t a handicap; it’s your superpower. You show up fully, unapologetically YOU.
  • That elusive “something missing” starts to fill up with genuine, resonant joy. You’re living on purpose, and that feels like pure gold.
  • Saying “no” becomes easier because you’re saying “yes” to your core self.

Living by your core beliefs isn’t selfish. It’s the most rebellious, liberating, magical thing you can do in midlife.

It is the art of saying sorry not sorry for wanting joy, clarity, adventure, and spunkiness.

Because when you live in alignment, your energy changes. You stop chasing… and start attracting.

Your Rebellious Action: Free Your Inner Compass Today

Ready to dust off that inner compass and start navigating your magnificent journey? It begins with awareness, then action.

Start small.  Start today.

You don’t need to set fire to your life, and you don’t need to change who you are; you just need to be more YOU.  You need to reignite those little bits of you that have been put on the back burner and turn that flame up.

Here’s how:

Pick Your Top 3-5 Values:

  • What resonates the most? (e.g., courage, creativity, impact, peace, humor, learning, community, authenticity). Don’t overthink it; trust your gut.
  • When do you feel the most YOU?

Audit your daily life:

  • Ask: “Where am I paying homage to my core beliefs?” “Where am I ditching them?”
  • How can you tweak the ones you ditched to bring them closer?
  • And the ones you are paying homage to, how does it feel?  That’s alignment, baby.

Make one rebel shift:

  • Say hell no to one thing this week that stands in the way of one of your core values.

This is your inner voice pointing you toward your most powerful self, your life force.

Reconnecting with your core beliefs isn’t a midlife crisis— it’s midlife magic.

You just might find that what feels like rebellion is actually alignment.

You’re Not Lost. You’re Just Ready to Realign

Living your core values isn’t a one-and-done kind of thing; it’s an ongoing practice, a daily recalibration. It’s how you move from merely surviving to unapologetically shining.

“You didn’t lose your inner voice; you just learned to ignore its whispers.”

Follow the whisper. Then start living your truth.

You already have the compass.  Now is the time to trust it.
